Insurance Questions
What's the difference between vision insurance and medical insurance for eye care?
Vision insurance (VSP, EyeMed) typically covers routine eye exams, glasses, and contact lens evaluations at a set copay. Medical insurance (HMSA, Medicare, Tricare) covers eye care that is medically necessary — such as eye exams for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma evaluation, urgent eye care, and treatment of eye diseases. In many cases, we can bill both your vision AND medical insurance for the same visit.
Does Medicare cover eye exams?
Medicare Part B does NOT cover routine vision exams (for glasses or contacts). However, it DOES cover medically necessary eye exams — for example, annual diabetic eye evaluations, glaucoma screening for high-risk patients, and treatment of eye diseases. If you have diabetes or are at risk for glaucoma, your Medicare exam may be covered.
What if I don't have vision insurance?
We welcome patients without insurance. We offer self-pay rates for comprehensive eye exams and contact lens evaluations. Please call us for current pricing.
Do you accept military insurance?
Yes — we accept Tricare, Tricare for Life, and Tricare Retired Reserve. We serve a significant number of military and veteran families from Pearl City, Aiea, and West Oahu.
How do I know what my insurance covers?
The easiest way is to call your insurance plan directly and ask about your eye care benefits before your appointment. You can also bring your insurance card and we will help verify your coverage when you arrive.
