Elevated eye pressure is a major glaucoma risk factor — even everyday habits like a tight necktie may temporarily affect intraocular pressure.
Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it can progress without obvious symptoms until significant vision is lost. Routine eye pressure checks and optic nerve evaluation are essential — we screen for glaucoma as part of comprehensive exams for patients of all ages.
Eye Pressure and Everyday Factors
Researchers at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary found that wearing a tightly fitted necktie increases intraocular pressure (the pressure inside the eye). Elevated eye pressure increases the likelihood of developing glaucoma. (British Journal of Ophthalmology, August 2003)
While a necktie alone does not cause glaucoma, the study highlights how sensitive eye pressure can be and why professional measurement during an exam matters.
What You Can Do
- Keep annual comprehensive eye exams — especially if you have a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, or are over 40
- Use prescribed eye drops consistently if you have been diagnosed with glaucoma
- Ask our team about your pressure readings and optic nerve health at each visit
